      The sun by itself does not give us vitamin D. You need to eat eggs, fatty fish and nuts to get the nutrient first, then the sun hitting in your skin will help to convert those nutrients into Vitamin D.

      This is similar that the case of plants. Plants need soil and water to grow, and also the sun that helps the plants to use the nutrients in the soil and the water.
