      In order to make fire, we need three ingredients: a fuel source, oxygen and energy (usually heat). Once all three ingredients are present, a chemical reaction called combustion (or burning) occurs. The fire flames we see are made up mainly of carbon dioxide, water vapor, oxygen and nitrogen.
