      Sunlight is necessary in order for plants to carry out photosynthesis. During the photosynthesis reaction, plants use light energy from the Sun, as well as water and carbon dioxide to create chemical energy, which they then store as starch. The plants can then later use the starch for energy when they need it for growth.
